Light Floor

Privacy

The short version

Light Floor keeps nothing about you. There are no accounts, no forms, no cookies, no analytics and no advertising on this site. The page times your connection inside your own browser, and the results stay in your browser.

What does our host see?

Our host sees your IP address, as every host does. Light Floor is served by Vercel, which receives each request, including your IP address and the page you asked for, in order to deliver it. Vercel works out an approximate city from that address and attaches it to the request. When the home page loads, it asks our own address /api/where for that city so it can compute distances from you. That function hands the city, its approximate coordinates and your country code back to your browser and keeps nothing: it writes no log of its own and stores nothing. Vercel's own handling of request data is described in Vercel's privacy policy at vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy.

What does the timing send?

To time your line, your browser sends small requests directly to public endpoints run by Amazon Web Services, one per cloud region, at addresses of the form dynamodb.<region>.amazonaws.com/ping. Each answers with a few bytes. Those requests go from your browser to Amazon, not through us, and Amazon sees your IP address as any server you contact does. Light Floor sends Amazon nothing else and receives nothing from Amazon about you. Amazon's privacy notice is at aws.amazon.com/privacy.

What can you change?

You can pick your city by hand instead of using the one your connection reports, and the page then uses only the city you picked. If you press Use My Location, your browser asks your permission and then gives the page your coordinates; they are used to compute distances in your browser and are not sent anywhere. The place you pick or share, or the one last used, is remembered in your browser's local storage so the next visit starts from it; clearing this site's data in your browser removes it.

Offline copy

The site installs a service worker so the floors still work without a connection. It stores a copy of the page, the map and, once you have opened the picker, the city list in your browser's cache. Nothing in that copy identifies you.
