What this site is

Light Floor is a free page that times your internet connection to public cloud endpoints from your browser and compares each round trip with the time light would need for the same distance. It also publishes static pages with the computed floors between pairs of large cities. There is nothing to buy and nothing to sign up for.

How far can the numbers be trusted?

The floors are computed from published constants and public coordinates, and the method, its sources and its known limits are printed on the home page under The Working. The measured times are what your browser recorded at that moment, on that network, and they change from minute to minute. Locations derived from an IP address can be wrong by hundreds of kilometres. Use the results to understand your connection, not as a service-level guarantee or a basis for a contract, a purchase or a trade.

Using the site

You may use the site and link to any page on it. Please do not run the timing in an automated loop against Amazon's endpoints; each visit already sends about one hundred and ninety small requests, and the endpoints belong to Amazon Web Services, not to us. The cloud regions, the endpoints and the names Amazon Web Services and AWS belong to Amazon. Light Floor is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Amazon, Corning, Vercel or any source named on the site.

Data and credits

The floor-page cities and their centres come from UN DESA's World Urbanization Prospects 2025 under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 IGO; the city picker and the cloud-region places come from GeoNames under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Coastlines come from Natural Earth, in the public domain. The group index of optical fibre comes from Corning's published product information for SMF-28e+. The computed floors on the static pages may be reused under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, with a link to the page they came from.
